i think it's about 3.5-4 litres with filter. i know i used to use mobile 1 in my old mk1 and they only came in 4l tubs. it pretty much took that, but defo no more

Maybe you need to check your oil then? it definately takes 4 litres! maybe slightly different on a conventional oil cooler Gti? but mine has the water bath type cooler 4 litres is bang on the level mk of the dipstick, but thanks for the reply

hope your dipstick thingy hasn't worked its way up the shaft. worth checking just in case. more likely the 3l capacty one is broken though

yeah good point, its got a new orange doofer tube thingy on and i checked it and it is pushed right down on the tube properly so i guess it must be reading right? runs nicer now anyway with fresh oil and filter and plugs

Just checked the VW mk1 handbook and Haynes manual and they state 3.0 litres without filter and 3.5 with for big blocks. I have got an air oil cooler, but all mk1 GTIs did, is yours a cabby? The big block engines went up to 3.5/4 litre in 85/86 when the hydraulic head came in (also bigger sump?), is it definetly a DX engine :dontknow:

Cheers

May be the water fed oil cooler, or a diffrence in design of the DX after 1983 - they didn't give it a hydrualic head did they?

cheers

it has got hydraulic tappets and the waterbath oil cooler and the bigger sump, maybe thats why the increased capacity?

My series 2 takes noticably less oil than my sportline.  Haynes quotes 3.5l with a filter change, which is about right, but that is for cars up to 1984!

thats why i just filled it to level on the dipstick!! no info was available, 4 litres takes it bang on the level mark, on mine anyway! they all use a bit so i always keep an eye on it every few days, been out blatting in it with the roof down all day today 8)  got some jealous/strange looks too! new Alpine head unit does the buisness with all the upgraded speakers that were already in it, sounds nice and is still audible even at speed
