got no idea what to do!

hey guys

ive just bout a 1800 gti y reg and notice the people on here are pretty clued up on mk1s.

my problem is:

when i got the car it idled quite fast, so i made adjustments at the throttle body screw,

i take the car out for a test and its fine just normal potterin around and the idle stays at 700-800rpm,

i take it out on the main road up to bout 70-80, stop at the roundabout and the idle stays at 2000rpm!

iv repeated this procedure about 3 times now and it keeps occuring!

it would be great if anyone could fill me in as to what to try but you will have to describe in basic terms because i dont know what nethin looks like

cheers peeps

j

Hi,

Sounds like the idle screw is not staying put.  there is a small rubber O ring on the screw which is supposed to stop it moving.  this ring may be worn or missing allowing your idle screw to screw out!

This is exactly what was happening on my car - the idle screw stays put when  you drive slowly around town, etc, but when you go for a long run on motorways etc, the prolonged engine-speeds unscrew the idle screw, because it's rubber seal is old, hardened, and shrunken, from the engine-heat.

Not sure if you can get a new seal from VAG, as I changed mine for a whole other screw with a better seal that I had lying about.
