Fuel tank advice

Post

Hi, I'm running a mk1 caddy with a injection engine and I've dropped the tank as I'm relocating the fuel pump from the engine bay to under the car also the sender wasn't working, , I've noticed that I do not have a lift pump and my tank is gravity fed, is this gonna effect my fuel supply? I'm attempting to use a swirl pot from a mk2 golf, which way should I go new tank or add a lift pump or just run with the one pump,
Thanks in advance

I would have to ask which type of Injection are you using.  CIS or Digifant. Each require a different psi rating of the pump, then depending on what or where and if a swirl pot is needed.  As you can add the Swirl /sump/filter to a bottom feeder.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Hi CIs I think it's a jh engine And it has a caddy tank I've had it running and driving be all up and down the road, it was  using a in line fuel pump which was situated in the engine bulkhead, which I wasn't happy with and when the pump packed up I thought a good idea to relocate to the back, and I liked the nk2 set up as all the pump accumulator and filter was housed  in the same bracket so I thought easier to fix to car, hope this helps you to help me so to speak. Cheers

use a mk1 pump, its what the sport uses, the mk2 setup needs a lift pump or it will run dry also you will need a 16v or k jet 8v one as the digifant gti uses a smaller pump so wont work with k jet.

I tried fitting a 16v one in my sport when I had issues and it didn't work well. my problem was the swirl pot in the middle of the caddy tank was not connected to the outlet so would cut out below 1/2 tank of fuel. after this was fixed the 8v mk1 pump worked great

I had to cut it down for it to fit too

Hi I noticed that as well that my pipe is not connected, very strange, I have a mk2 lift pump which I was gonna modify the tank and then add that but not sure if that's a possibility, when I originally had the mk1 pump in the engine bay it ran ok apart from when I went round corners it would cut out, then started whining and then gave up and died I replaced it with a new one and the engine would go to fire but then not, I checked the relay and that worked well so was t sure what was causing it?thats why I thought it was due to lack of lift pump and the fact that the pump was at the front of the car as oppose to by the tank ? I'm a bit lost, the hoses I have i a bit worn so could be that ?
Lastly where did you attatch your bracket to on your caddy ?
Thanks again for all your help

mine was a sport so had mounts and pump holder for the mk1 style gravity fed pump, sorry I don't have a pic of it, but its very similar to a mk1 golf gti but had a shorter pipe to link to the accumulator, I think some brackets could be made fairly easily to bolt a golf style pump holder in the same place.

cutting out round corners was the same problem I had and it was a pipe in the tank that had perished so might be worth dropping the tank to check.

this is the pipe that is supposed to be connected.

this is the swirl pot in the caddy tank, you can see the bits of the rubber pipe in it that had perished, fairly sure  the tank is the same on the sport, 1.6 carb and diesels

Thanks for this, how did you get the pipe back on?  It's quite fddlely, I see where the pump can go now, so I'll do that, does your tank not have a lift pump in the tank ?  Also ive a got a lot of snot in the boot on of mine I've tried a magnet but still quite dirty, any ideas cheers again and apologies for all the questions

the sport uses the same tank you have with no problems and I think you would struggle to fit a lift pump in as the swirl pot will be in the way. to get the pipe fixed I lined them up and pushed a smaller pipe through from the outside but not really ideal.

if I still had the caddy I would try and make a tool to replace the brass pipe with a piece of fuel hose. a pipe with a loop of wire through so it makes a noose might work as a tool.

I found paint thinners and a washing up brush with an extended handle the best thing to get rid of varnish in a tank or electrolysis works well if its rusty
