There should be 2 letters and some numbers stamped into the block just below spark plug No.3

What engine code and number are in the log book?

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Over here on the Back side of the block Seen from underneath between the oilpan and freeze plugs are the engine stampings as in 1.5D that was on my diesel or 2H on my Cabriolets, both German built engines.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Above the red ring in picture there is a date ring, granted this is for the head, which may not belong to the block, but that coul help. It will be 83 or 88 or what ever year it was made?

What makes you think the engine is out of a Mk2?
Do you have any pictures of your engine?

Yes that's out of a Mk2 golf Gti, I think is a PB engine but with some Mk1 golf bits from the your 83 golf eg oil cooler.
DX engine running k-jet fuel injection should look like this.

A PB engine from a Mk2 Golf Gti with Digifant fuel injection I had a few years ago.

The basic engines are very similar so most parts fit both engines, VW changed the fuel injection system for later cars (I think 88 onwards?) so early Mk2's also had the K-jet.
