1.8 engine rebuild for more performance

Morning folks,
Sorry if this has been covered before but I'm looking for advice on who in the UK you could recommend or had experience with to rework my standard 1.8 DX engine to squeeze a little more performance out of her.
Engine has been sat in the car in the garage for 8 years, it ran perfectly well the time I used it but it's never been started since so i thought while I'm having it stripped may as well tweak it.

I know in the 80's and 90's there would be plenty of choices but now things have changed and the "Engineering" shops are resorting to Remaps and big turbos nowadays, I'm not sure who still does this type of work and who is reliable.

I've read articles that suggest improvements such as a rebore to oversized piston, head skim, ported and polished, new cam and vernier pulley and four branch manifold. have also read the fuel injection system is a bit prone to imbalance so would need that setting up too.
Understand there are engine conversions out there but I'm trying to keep the car standard (ish)

Would appreciate your shared experiences and advice.

I'm in Cheshire so a local shop would be good but happy to travel anywhere for the right job.

Thanks in advance

Couple of questions

How much do you want to spend?
How much more power do you want?

You can gain a couple of BHP from better manifold but depends on what manifold you have fitted to the car already.

Easy cheap conversion is get a 2.0l engine block from a Mk3 golf, they look very similar and give you more torque for not much money.

Block and head work does not come cheap.

A properly set up standard DX engine is still pretty quick and will keep up with modern traffic.

All as mentioned above… or try a mild lift cam good for some mid to high range torque. Second hand looking at £100-150 nice easy install. I put one in my tintop and it has helped to push it on a little.  :$

Cheers Hugh.

Thanks for the advice chaps.
Having done a far bit more research and spoken to a few people I've decided to just strip the engine, replace the worn bits and just spend time cleaning and getting it set up properly.

Car back from the body shop at the end of the month so time to start on the engine!
