Hi there have recently replaced cam belt that side of its all ok
Want to find out a little more information on using my timing light as a lot of my manuals say conflicting stuff on degrees and the vacuum pipe on or off
I have a 1992 golf cabriolet 1.8 gti bosch kjet manual transmission. With I think a transistorised distributor.
I have found the tdc mark and 6 degrees btdc
At the moment I have warmed up engine removed and plugged the vacuum pipe  at tick over 950 rpm and lined up the 6 degrees timing mark.
Could some of you golf experts advice me if the vacuum pipe should be on / off
And what revs?
As too high mechanical advance would start happening

vacuum pipe off and plugged, 6 degrees BTDC for kjet engines

Reason you see both is for carb engines the dizzy vac line is left on, engine timed to 18deg BTDC ;)

just at idle for both, 950rpm will be fine. you can usually add a bit extra advance if you're runnign it on decent fuel :)

FYI… The set up mentioned above is if you are running on super unleaded which is this the best fuel to use to get the best out of the engine.
I believe that normal unleaded needs the timing retarded by 6 degrees.
