1.8 DX Engine - what fuel additive do you use?

Post

Just purchased a 1.8 GTi Campaign and wondered what fuel additive people recommend to use.  I will be using the car on supermarket unleaded fuel but clearly that is not the 97 octane required for the engine.  What do other members do regarding fuel additives?

You don't need the lead, so instead of messing about with additives use 97 ron, which is readily available, should retard ign timing if using lower octane stuff (no ecu to do it for you.)

All water cooled VW engines from 1974 will run on unleaded petrol (I think it was already on sale in Germany) VW fitted hardened valves so not problem there.
The GTi does run best on super unleaded, 97 RON is fine and close enough or Tesco sells 99 RON petrol. If you want to run normal unleaded you will need to retard the timing.

The problem with petrol now a days is they are adding more ethanol to petrol which is fine if you have a plastic fuel tank and fuel lines but not so good for us with metal tanks and lines and rubber fuel hoses as I think it rots the rubber and eats the metal tanks.
The current amount of ethanol is at 5% but the goverment is going to increase it to 10%!
I think there is an additive you can add to counter act the ethanol but I've not looked into it to much as I'll wait till it gets to 10% before I starting adding it.

This sort of stuff.

i think super unleaded has no ethanol , its just the 95.  I refurbed my fuel system 7 years ago now & dont have any probs running on super unleaded, tried running 95 when first got the car & had lots of probs with hot starts due to lower vapour point.  As far as additives go just a waste of money in my opining used many additives on my first mk1 a long time ago now & looking back now I should of just bought more beer instead

It's a couple of years since I flew, but I used to and own a share in an aircraft that ran on unleaded. The ethanol level was critical in the fuel (more a CAA legal point than a technical one on our aircraft.)

We used to test our fuel for ethanol and had more issue with super unleaded, so stuck to 95, which the aircraft would run on anyway.

When we purchased the aircraft back in 2009 they were already 'about' to have 10% ethanol in fuel. If it's not happened yet I would bet it's a way off due to objections from many industries.
