1.8 8v / 16v!!

Am i right in thinking they did a MK 1 1800 Gti but only 8 v??

Is the 1.8 16v from a mk 2 golf the same block but different head as the 1.8 8v used in the mk 1??  Can you simply bolt on a 8v head to the 16v block??    The reason being for sprint  / hill climb class purposes you have to use the engine that was produced in the car to be legal for most the classes and you have to keep the same amount of valves per cylinder as it came out the factory ie you can't change an 8V head for a 16v head…

The gear box has to be the same as designed for the car aswell allthough internals can be altered!! did the 1800 Mk1 (if they did one) have the 020 9a box??

I have a mk 1 i am rebuilding with a mk 2 engine, (seperate at the moment!!) with a view to using it for track days but hopefully it won't be far from being legal for sprints etc

Thanx

Mk1 only came with 8 valves.
(Unless you are allowed to count the french special edition "16S" which was a 1.6 16v)

Heads are inter-changeable, but you'd also need to change the pistons to keep the correct compression ratios. 16v block also has additional oil squirters at the bottom of the cylinders to keep the underside of the pistons cooler.

020 9A box - yes, I believe this was the code fitted to the "Campaign" edition Mk1 (This is the box I have in mine - nice and short!)

ANy pictures of your race car project?

AL.

By the way, the 1.8 GTIs mostly came with the 020 7G gearbox, which is almost identical to the ratios of the 9A (and is identical externally), and is probably more commonly available now.

So they are!

This is useful for checking out what ratios your box has…

I noticed that the site says that the clutch and hub diameters are different between the 9A and 7G 'boxes. I've never heard of / experienced any differences when sourcing/fitting clutches & inner CVs on 1800 Mk1 GTIs - is this a mistake on the site, or are these interfacing parts the same for both 'boxes anyway?

I think there are a few minor errors on the site - If you look at the box codes, the 9A is listed twice, with exactly the same ratios but with a different "MPH in 5th@3500RPM" figure!

I've not heard of any probs with the Clutches etc though..

I thought so.
Still, a useful link  :y:

I think that the 16v 'box ran bigger diff output flanges to the 8v one - if you want to run a 16v gearbox I believe you can but you have to use late model Mk1 "Clipper" style draveshafts.

Thanx for the info, will keep the engine as 16v until finished and if i think it could be competitive will convert it to make it comply with the regs so thanx for your help.

There are no pictures worth seeing yet, the shell is on axle stands and needs a bit of work and the engine is in bits!!!  I have a 205 sprint car but it is no fun on the roads its too rough and vibrates lots!! want something thats more forgiving but still quick and fun and will be comfortable enought to go across to the ring in!!!
