1.8 16v KR in to mk1 caddy

Post

Now my cabby engine is done I’m now working on finishing my mk1 caddy. I want to scrap to low powered 1.6 carb engine and replace it with a 1.8 16v mk2 engine. Does anyone have any how to guides or and knowledge they can pass on. Are the mounts the same and can I use original clocks.  I will be getting the engine, box, loom, pump and ecu all from the same place which should be easier.

lots of info out there, but:
1. yes can use mounts
2. yes can keep clocks

need a custom manifold/downpipe setup, plus loom will need converting to fusebox. if the mk2 is pre-90 the loom plugs into your fusebox just most of it will need shortenign and a bit of extending for some of the wires to the throttle and airbox

Did the 16v swap in a caddy sport and used Ashley conversion manifold.

the fuel pump was same as mk1 golf gti so I would use that rather than the mk2 one as can't fit a lift pump In the caddy tank.

Fit 9" servo and 22mm master cylinder with reservoir spun 180 to avoid it hitting the dizzy,

if you can't fit the 16v loom find a 8v gti loom and that will plug in so only need to add the ecu and idle system for the 16v

Upside down?

Whip

Noun - Car

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the whip. The term has now been generalised to classify any automobile.

with lift pump it depends on your tank setup, on a mk1 with carb tank you need a lift pump even with a normal mk1 main pump as it cant suck fuel up out the top. a tintop gti doesnt use one becasue it has a swirl pot built into the tank.

on a caddy if it has an outlet on the bottom dont need a lift pump, but if theres no swirl pot inside ideally you want to mount an external swirl pot fed by an inline pre-supply pump to keep main pump fed at all times. simple facet carb type pump will do fine. if the mk1/2 main pump runs dry it will start to eat itself as fuel lubricates the internals.

a mk2 pump assy is handy as the pump is built into the pot, but as they're getting old its a struggle to find one that isnt split and good ones tend to be massivly expensive.  with a mk2 pump on a again either a lift pump in tank or an inline pump to keep it filled up, though in a golf/jetta space is too tight underneath for one of these anyway.

dont bother flipping the tank, thats not the main issue with a 22mm master anyway. the main clearance issue is to the brake lines, to fix this simply fit an ABF dizzy cap and rotate distribuyter 180 degrees so it faces forwards. use an 8v king lead, or if you have spares you can pop the ends off 16v bosch/beru plug leads and fit cap end to it to make yourself a custom length king lead.
