Weber carb running problem
I have fitted a replacement weber twin choke carb to my wifes 1988 1.8 cabby clipper. It was starting and ticking over. She drove it about 6 miles and when she came back she said that the revs were running away with her at times. I had a look and it seemed like the return spring was sticking.
I sprayed it with wd40 and took the car out for a trial. i got to the bottom of my road and it cut out and wouldnt start. I checked under the bonnet and noticed that there wasnt any fuel in the inline filter.
We pushed the car back up to the house and i opened and closed the choke a couple of times and tried to start it again. On checking the inline filter again i noticed there was now petrol in it however its not firing up. I think its a fuel starvation problem. Any ideas?

Is it pumping fuel when you crank it over

Im going to disconnect the feed line to the carb tomorrow and check that. I'll update the thread with my findings.

block off the return pipe on the fuel regulator, thats the one that is between the fuel pump and the carb, i had intermitant problems but seems to have cured it by doing this

Thanks. I disconnected the feed from the accumulator to the carb yesterday to check if there was fuel getting to the carb. There was but there are traces of water in it so at some point i shall have to drain the tank.
I also removed the air filter to check if the fuel was being jetted into the carb, again it was. So i prepped the carb with some fuel and ig fired up and ran.
Its still running rough, which could be down to the water in the fuel and also the flange between the manifold and carb looking like it needs replacing.
I also noticed that the inline fuel filter had been fitted the wrong way. Ive replaced it with a slightly bigger one but it doesnt fill right up with fuel. Does this mean that i need to change the fuel pump?

my inline fuel filter never fills up only about a quarter full. seem to have read on here that with a wber carb you dont need the accumulator, as there was water coming through there might be a pile of gooey stuff in there, when i had a problem i renewed it as it didn't seem to pump enough petrol through

Thanks for that. I'll see about changing the accumulator then.

I have now done away with the accumulator and replaced the fuel line from the pump, running it directly to the carb and have blanked the return.
I have also replaced the flange between the carb and the inlet manifold.
The car is running better, although not 100% yet. I dont know whethrr the carb needs setting up correctly.

The car still doesnt feel responsive enough when the foot is put down on the accelerator pedal. It seems to hesitate and doesnt pull as i would expect it to. Could it be possible that the carb is running lean?

i bought a colour tune kit, you replace the no1 plug with a special plug which has a window to see the flame tune the mixture until bunson blue and follow rest of instruction about choke etc and that should be it
see this Gunson G4074 Colortune Single Plug Kit 14mm : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive
i have mine for years and use it about every two months just to check

The car runs now but still feels sluggish and unresponsive. It is also using too much fuel, although the emissions are ok. Will it help if I replace the accumulator under the bonnet so that the return fuel line is connected again.
Also when driving the car it seems to pick up slightly better if you nurse the accelerator on and off as apposed to flooring it.

Well ive refitted the fuel accumulator under the bonnet and the car does feel a bit better on acceleration, although I haven't had it out on a long run.

Hope all is cured. Mine had the same problem- revisited the fuel pump (changed 6 minths back- think it may be a cheapo now playing up) as it wasn't (sporadically) getting fuel to the filter- the car just dies, but after a couple of minutes runs again.
I've got a clipper…not sure it has a accumulator

Im calling it an accumulator but thats maybe not its right name Basically the fuel flow line comes through the inline filter then goes to the pump. It then flows from the pump into the part that im calling the accumulator where there are two other connections. One being the feed to the carb and the other being the return fuel line.
I think that because there was no return connected before that the pump was over feeding the carbs, which was bogging it down.
I have checked and there is definitely fuel running back down the return now.
What year of clipper is yours?

its a 91- back to square 1 for me, just had it out and loss all power. Looked under the bonnet and no fuel getting to the filter- but cant be the pump.
Arghhhhh!

Have you checked the fuel filler pipe to make sure its not corroded and filling your tank and system full of rust. Have you run the car really low on fuel?
I will have a look at ours tomorrow and see if I can figure out what could be wrong with yours.

Got a new tank, running it always above quarter full and nothing in the filter…even changed up the pump but suspecting not its now drawing enough to keep the weber so looking at an electric jobby to rule it out and ensure constant pressure.
Heard cams on transporters sometimes wear or become out of sync with the mechanical (could be the reason for the sporadic cut in drawing fuel), and pressure when I ran the pump without the line on my finger didn't feel strong.
Any help, or even you view on how much your cabby sucks (ooh err!) would be great.

Having the same problem with my 88 cabby, I've done the Weber conversion had it running sounded fine had it out driving for 10-15 mins all good. took it for its MOT 2 days later and it took a while to get it started up, once it sounded like it was ticking over fine I set off but lost all power 2 minutes later and broke down! Took it to the mechanic who stripped the carb down checked all the jets as he told me there was no fuel getting the the carb. In the end he bypassed the fuel vapour separator which I guess that's what you're calling the accumulator with a fuel filter and it seemed the solve the problem. Again tried to fire it up the day after and back to square 1?
