[Golf Mk1] Automatic gearbox - Changing engine

Post

What engine can I put in Golf Mk1 1,6?

Hi,
I've got Golf mk1 1,6 with automatic gearbox. I want to change engine to 1,1 or 1,3 or 1,5 diesel without changing gearbox.
Is it possible?
What parts (apart from engine of course) must I change/add? Will everything fit?

(sorry for my English :))
Cheers.

Welcome to the club first of all.

Please don't worry about your English, it's more than good enough and is possibly better than mine and I'm English! 😂👍🏼

As for engines now I'm no expert but you can put pretty much anything in if you know what you're doing.

For example a Golf Mk1 held the record for the fastest VW in the world for years!

The car is called the 16 Vampire from Germany 🇩🇪, Google it for lots of information and videos about it.

But in simple terms Audi engines seem to be fairly popular these days.

As an example but look through some of the project posts to learn a lot about engine changes in general! 👍🏼

the 1.6 carb auto box will mate to 1.5-1.9 diesel engines mk1-3, but the thing is will the ratios inside be any use at all for the diesel as they prefer long tall ratios while petrols do better with shorter.

if thats all good the only other issue you have to sort is finding the correct control cables and lever setup to convert a manual diesel to automatic.

best bet is try to find an automatic diesel donor and swap it over. mk3 or passat tdi would be a very nice install. mk4 and newer still fit engien side, but the auto box could be a struggle I'm not sure how they mount up

"diesel as they prefer long tall ratios while petrols do better with shorter."
You mean that diesel engines are bigger than petrol?

I forgot to tell, that I want engine only from Mk1, not newer.
Whats the difference between mk1 engine from manual gearbox car and from automatic?

Rubjonny means,
Diesel engines like taller gear ratios as they don't rev as high as petrol engines, e.g. Red line on a Diesel engine is 4500 rpm while petrol engines Rev up to 6500 rpm.

same engine in Mk1 golf with a auto and manual gearbox.

exactly. or to put it another way, generally at any given road speed the engine will be at a lower rpm on a diesel gearbox, than it would be on a petrol one.

With some exceptions, the petrol 4+e is similar to some diesel code boxes for example. I'm not sure how the auto boxes are geared is all, so wait for someone to chime in on that :)

your auto box will definitely fit a mk1/2/3 1.5-1.9 diesel box, you'll just need to add the support bearing in the crank hole then away you go
