Two awkward sump allen bolts.

Post

So i was taking the sump off to clean it (old car standing for a long time) and of the 20 allen bolts holding it on there are two which are obstructed by the gearbox, any body know a good tool to remove them easily? or the VAG workshop tool?

I got them off with a allen socket drive but it was a horrible angle and messed up the bolts somewhat.

long reach ball end socket 5mm socket bit? (or was it 4?)

I cut a ball ended Allen key, in half and used it in a socket.

But I'm tight, yes a proper ball ended tool is the one.

When i had stripped my back 2 pan bolts, (sump_) I went to the hardware store and got a Self Tapping machine screw.  Wrapped it with a little PTFE tape and screwed it up to tight.

Those are buggers on a good day, and I never thought about using a "Allen" bolt…(this is what is great on the forums….

I do use a 1/4 drive socket(shorty 6pt). and 2 Wobble extensions to get to them…. I also start tightening them by hand till snug, and used only a 1/4 drive Torque wrench to put them at 87in/lbs.

One day when I have to drop the tranny, I may replace the rear crank seal and carrier to totally fix,,,,,

Almost makes a case for Grinding the bell housing so you can get a Straight shot worth while.

I don't know of the early ones, but I do know that my 81 Golf, and 89-90-92-93Cabriolets all had 10mm bolts.

I would think that the Ball-ended "Allen" drivers would be good in that situation as you can drive them at an angle.
