She starting again! -* Sorted *-

Checked compression, all 4 cylinders are above 100psi. This good?
There is fuel, the carb drips fuel in..
There is no air restriction…
Checked all 4 spark plugs with their leads for spark, it is okay.
Timing is still right.
WTF can it be???
If i try to start it it just spins and ocasionally makes a pop out the carb…
Please help, this is my daily drive and I need to get it started to get it at my mechie!!!

It could be any of the above, cos if an engine has fuel + spark + compression and the timing is right, it will run. So you've missed something.

It might be the mixture is well out, but I'd be checking other stuff first.

Checked all again. There is feul going thru. There is spark. There is compression on all the cylinders. The timing seems right. The mark on the crank pulley aligns with the mark and the mark thru the inspection hole with the cam timing mark and the distributor mark is right! What can I be missing!!! It has to start!!!! There is fuel, spark, timing, air everything is there! The battery is fully charged! I dont know anymore!

The timing seems right

Is it timed at TDC on no 1 cylinder?

Is it  timed 180 degrees out?

Are the spark plug leads on the correct connections on the dizzy?

Are the points gapped properly?

Yes, timed at TDC on no 1 cylinder!
What do you mean timed 180 degrees out?
Spark plug leads on correct connections
Point gaps are 100%

might be a longshot but…………

on my dads 16v mk2 (yeah i know no points no carb etc etc) he had exactly the same problem. It was the distributor. He ordered a brand new one from VW and it spent another 8 weeks in the mechanics, when an auto electrician found that the new dizzy was faulty.

So might be the dizzy, and have you changed it atall?

I have thought of the dizzy... Maybe change it tomorrow and see what happens! Any more suggestions?

Phoned a friend of mine that knows a bit more of this stuff, he said it sounds like the timing is out with 180 degrees, so I will have a look again at it! Would the engine not start if the timing were out 180 degrees?

Timing was out 180 degrees, fixed it and she started first time!
Thanks for all your help guys
