Removing Rocker cover studs ???????

Hi Im after changing my cork rocker cover gasker to the rubber one, I've ordered up the gasket kit from vw and im just after a bit of advice on best methods for removing the old studs from the head and really really dont want to shear one of them. I have thought about using two nuts tightened down on each other then undoing the bottom nut against the top nut to undo the stud if that makes sense ?!?!

Thanks in advance  :)

Well I've made a start and the gasket kit comes complete with the studs, there are two types, one set of studs are a lot longer than the others so will be using the ones that match the length of the ones im taking out. As for the removal of the old studs I have just one thats being a pain  :banghead: I have even resorted to the 3 nut method as you can just about squeeze 3 on to the top of the stud, but still this last one is not moving  :banghead:
Oh well best get back to it !!!!!

I had this problem the other day. You can get stud extractors from any good tool shop/motor factor which work really well. Bit of penetration spray might do you a favour too  :)

Well the last stud is out  :D  left it over night after giving it a bit of penetrating oil ( cheers for the tip)  and it came out with 3 nut method, new studs are in and just having a cuppa before putting him back together.

Also had a look at the filter in the tank and glad i did as it was a little blocked, so cleaned out with paper clip, filler neck is stainless so thats ok, its prob from old filler neck, also got out a few bit of rust with my trusty telescopic magnet !

Went for a drive today and all is well  :D  Car pulled really well through the gears, no hesitating on acceleration and there is a real difference in the quantity of fuel in the in line filter.

No more leaking rocker cover as well  :D , so can deffinately recommend the rubber gasket modification, well worth it !!!!

Hi
I got this rocker cover kit too and replaced all the studs the tread on the new studs seems to stop pretty high up. My cover has gone off to get powder coated so haven't put it on yet I'm just hoping it seals like you say. image.jpeg

It looks about right, once you have the rocker cover and the long metal bar fitted there should be enough to tighten it down, just don't over tighten it or you will bend the rocker cover and it will leak.

When you get the rocker cover back, if it's been blasted before power coated make sure the gauze is really clean of any stuff they used to blast it, Give it a very good wash out. I've seen and heard of engines being worn by the grit/sand left in the gauze getting back inside the engine and scoring the boars.

Picture of my studs with the rubber gasket. (no gasket fitted, I'm just showing the cam timing mark.)

With my rocker cover I rubbed it down and painted it with a rattle can.
After rub down.

Painted. I did block off the breather hole while painting, picture taken when it was dry.
