Mk1 caddy 1.6 petrol cutting out.

Post

I've just started using the mk1 after giving it a 3 month rest.
everything seems fine for a week, then it started cutting out randomly while driving. The rev needle would drop to zero instantly, no splutter just straight to nothing then start again while coasting along about 2 seconds later. So, had a good look at it, replaced the wire that goes to inlet manifold because it was burnt out for some reason?Fitted a new coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm and condenser as it looked cracked, points looked ok.It started 1st time and drove great for a few days and then it happened again and wouldn't start again and hasn't since also cleaned the weber and fit a new flange, and there's plenty of fuel getting to carb. All it does it start for a second with choke out, it revs up to 6000rpm without touching the accelerator, then dies Has anyone got any idea's what could be wrong Thanks Darren.

It was intermittent John, turn the key and the oil & battery lights didnt come on then 3rd go it did.
I swapped over a ignition switch from a 88 cabriolet doner today and its exactly the same, it just revs straight up to 6000rpm, then cuts out, The carb pops aswell.

Cheers Darren

Have you checked inside the carb with the air filter off and the engine not running that the butterfly opens and closes, with pulling on the cable from the accelarator pedal?

so the ignition lights still dont come on intermittently or was that fixed? becasue if not you still have an ignition problem if not the switch then the wiring to it, or your wiring from battery to fusebox is loose/damaged perhaps

Thanks for the reply's and help Guys :thumbs:Its all running fine now.
:$When I fit a new carb flange I didn't tighten the 2 cap head bolts that secures the base plate to the flange :$Hence why it wouldn't start or die if it did.
Lesson learned - Don't answer phone to the missus when working on car and keep your concentration :thumbs:I also fitted a new fuel pump and vapour seperator last night and there's a much faster flow of fuel hitting the fuel filter, so no more hesitance  / missing a beat, like it was doing.
But essentially it was the ignition switch as John said that was at fault to begin with.
