On the Caddy forum a few people have installed later 1.6 turbos, 1.9 NA or 1.9 turbos in the MK1 based Caddy and it is a relatively easy swap but requires the inlet manifold from a 1.6 and various other parts depending on what you start with. The later TDI engines are much more difficult but it can be done. The above assumes that you start with a diesel for the fuel and heater plugs pipes/wires to be already available, although these would be not be very difficult to add in to a petrol based car.
A 1.6 or 1.9 Turbo with 70-80bhp and a mountain of torque would be fab in a MK1.
