Complete exhaust system

Post

Good afternoon,

I am facing a big (not at all, is quite small) problem.
I own a '91 cabrio, 1.6 75hp, fitted with a LPG system that in less than a year will need to be revised, so as I drive for very short period of time (less than 4 months a year) the idea is to remove the whole system, gaining back my previous 50kg, more ore less.
The plann was to change also the exhaust system to get some more spint in the car itself, and was thinking about the Supersprint 60m diameter system.
BUT… there are two different manifolds to chose from, a similar to the original 4 in 2 in 1, or a more simpler 4 in 1…
I really would like to increase the acceleration than the maximum speed, as the car itself is quite heavy (??), which one would be better?
Installed there is already a BMC panel air filter, would I need something else to make the most out of the exhaust/inlet air system?
Maybe camshafts? Don't know which are factory installed now, so don't know what to chose from.
Installing a better ignition system (coils/rotor/distributor)? I have the TCI unit on.
Last question, which carb do I have on? Which one can I replace it with, without having the cable to be pulled into the car from the engine bay?

Regards,

Mirko.

Which country are you in? 1991 would be a 1.8 litre 90bhp if it were a carb, I think they changed from 1.6 (75bhp) to 1.8 (90bhp) in around 1986 in the UK.

4-2-1 manifold would be better than 4-1 in theory, but in practice it would depend on the individual manifolds.

In theory a GTI cam would be better too.

I don't understand why you'd not want a throttle cable.

Hi Paul,

I am from Italy.
So, will keep looking for the 4-2-1 manifold then.

Than I can just stick in a stock GTI cam (1.6 of course)?

For the carb, is just a personal idea, no real problem… Wich one could I fit into?

Not sure about the cam, I think any which matches the kind of lifters (mechanical or hydraulic) should be okay but its anyone's guess whether you'd see much of the benefit with the same head etc. Maybe better to get a GTI head and block up the injector holes etc??

Carb - unless there's something wrong with the existing, there's no point changing it. It would probably need rejetting if you change the cam and exhaust etc, so might be worth going for a Webber. But you'd need to do a rolling road session with someone who has, and can change the jets, on the carb to make it worthwhile. This will make a difference.
