Clipper carb

The engine revs at about 3200 then when warmed up drops down to about 700 the trouble is it sticks again at about 3200 for no reason .Do you think this is the auto choke or the carb, would you suggest a new part or carb??

I know the Waxstat on these 2E2 carbs are prone to failure. Try GSF for a new one as a first step.

It won't be the automatic choke, if that were faulty the revs would drop and the engine would hunt with the rich mixture. Check all of the vacuum pipes, pay particular attention to the ones behind the carb. I don't want to contradict dubboy but I think if the waxstat were faulty the revs would just stay high from cold, but not as high as 3200.

I ran a MKII Driver for 5 years. It had the same 2E2 carb has your Clipper but 1600 instead of 1800cc(?) It was always giving trouble. Yes they can rev 3000rpm for about 5-10 mins when started. Occasionally, usually after a motorway run it would stick at 3000 even when warm. Its other trick was to start and idle OK but stall when you tried to pull away. I had both the waxstat and pull-down unit replaced on various occasions, can?t remember what did what. On a number of other occasions I fixed it myself by reconnecting loose pipes or wires that festoon the carb. Not one of VWs must reliable pieces of kit?..

Now I have to fix the GTI that starts OK then idles at @500-600rpm until warm. :dontknow:

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

To be fair - I think that carbs often have a lot of maintanence that is neglected. Cured a number of running problems on smaller carb engines by cleaning out vacuum pipes and checking connections etc. Haynes even says to clean up all these pipes every 6 or so months. In reality I think very few garages ever do this.

Early-1800, might even be a similar solution for your GTI's idle. Got same problem with mine, from what I've read it is possibly the auxilary air valve needs cleaning out.

If after this weekends clean up on the carb its no better what is the best way to go replace the waxstat / pulldown etc anyone got an opinion on getting a recon off ebay. Also when the engine is turned off it tends to run  on is the anti over run valve part of the carb ??

Replaced all of the vacuum pipes one of which was split and one just fallen off .Choke works fine now and the revs are no longer sticking   :D Upto now the engine is also not over running.
