Hi,
From my experience, and I’m still running the Peirburg with no problems,  I wold check and replace all of the vacuum hoses in the system, even the ones on the air filter.  (if you still have the original air filter ).

It’s normally the flexi rubber hoses that perish,  you can buy this on ebay for 2 or 3 pound for a meter length. Or local motor factors.
Also worth a look is the brake servo vacuum lines too.

Check the cold / warm air flap in the air filter for proper operation. ( this is normally seized, if you still have the original air filter ).
Then check the dizzy cap / rotor arm plugs and leads.

Once you are certain there are no air leaks in the system and the spark side of things are good  then check the timing.

The Peirburg is a good carb if its set up properly, its just misunderstood.

for ignition timing setup it should be set to 18 deg BTDC when warm while engine is at idle, there is an 18 degree diamond marker on the flywheel so no need for a fancy timing light you just need to unscrew the big plastic bung to see it with your billy basic timing light (or with your advanced fancy one set to 0degree)
