Coil issue is solved.
It turns out the plug I had connected to the coil was actually speedo sensor.
So I've now got to acquire a mk2 coil to run my forthcoming beast

Cheers pal
Still need to get around to getting the rocker cover coloured.
Was originally keen on a mirror polish but I'm unsure how long the finish will hold up under the bonnet.
Either that or may get it done in a red.
Want to upgrade pads and discs in addition to the larger servo I've fitted and the master cylinder
In peoples opinion would the standard gti discs and uprated pads be good enough stopping power.
Or
Would it have to be a grooved/drilled gti disc and uprated pads
I've currently only got solid discs.

i have the mk2 servo / res the same as you and standard mk1 gti disc's and pads on my 2.0 16v cabby and it stops fine ..

If you have the servo/mastercylinder fitted get bigger brakes more power later cornering breaking equals more fun im fitting 256mm brake upgrade as the 280mm or 288mm does not fit under all 15inch wheels plus you may have to use the brackets to make them fit
It dunt fit

Cheers for the tips. I'm just going to repaint my calipers red and install some gti black diamond discs and green stuff pads. This in combo with the 16v servo and a 22mm mc should keep me stopping quick enough

Have a Ramair induction kit on order
And some pressed German no. plates.
Does anyone have a pair of radiator clamps or a battery clamp for sale.
Mine were nicely re painted and then thrown away by no one?
As happens all the time.
Get some progress smashed on Saturday.

i stuck mine in from the top mate, but my reason for replying is i know its a different engine but bert put a 1.9 turbo diesel in last saturday from underneath like you want to do, all he removed was the alternator off the front so you can tilt engine forward so manifold doesn't hit skuttle tray on way up
hope this helped

ANOTHER DAY….
MANAGED TO BOLT THE GEARBOX, ENGINE AND MANIFOLD TOGETHER TODAY
LOOKS PRETTY GOOD
BLACK DETAILING IS FINISHED ON THE BOX
GOT MY POLO G40 SENDER AS WELL
THE MK2 GOLF SENDER IS INCORRECT FIT
SO ILL BE SWAPPING THE ACTUAL LIFT PUMP FROM THE MK2 SENDER ONTO THIS NEW ONE
HOWEVER I NEED TO ALTER SOME WIRING AS THE NEW SENDER HAS 3 PINS
WHEREAS THE OLD HAS 2 PINS
OLD SENDER AND PLUG
NEW SENDER CONNECTION
NOT SURE BUT WILL IT JUST BE A CASE OF ADDING AN ADDITIONAL LIVE FOR THE IN TANK PUMP
I PRESUME IT IS BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY
MOVING ON
I MANAGED TO GET MY HANDS ON A NEW 4 OUTLET MASTER CYLINDER AS WELL
AND…
I HAVE NEW PADS
AND
DRILLED AND GROOVED VENTED DISCS COMING
SO IM CONFIDENT MY NEW POWERPLANT WONT KILL ME..

TIME FOR A LITTLE UPDATE…….
BEEN STUCK IN AND SO NEARLY FINISHED
CAN'T WAIT
GOT MY NEW MASTER CYLINDER ON
HAD TO SPEND A GOOD WHILE SLOWLY BENDING THE PIPES BUT IT WAS EASIER THAN EXPECTED
REALLY FELT LIKE ONE OF THOSE JOBS WHICH YOU LEAVE TO ANOTHER DAY
HERE IT IS ALL PLUMBER IN
THIS IS THE REAL SHAME
WHAT DO WE SEE HERE?
NO DAMN CAMBELT COVER. THATS WHAT
GOT A NEW CAMBELT SO MY LIFE DOSNT END BUT EURO DIDN'T BRING MY COVER AND SO DIDN'T GET TO PLONK THE ENGINE IN… TUT TUT
ALSO GOT A NEW TENSIONER AS THE OTHER ONE WAS A BIT NOISY
AND IN WITH THEM IS SOME NEW BOLTS FOR THE CRANK COG. OLD ONES WERE UNSERVICEABLE
SO WHILE I WAS BORED UNABLE TO PUT THE ENGINE IN I JAZZED UP MY ROCKER COVER
PAINTED IT BLACK.
RUBBED DOWN THE RIBS
THEN RUBBED THEM DOWN SOME MORE UNTIL THIS
QUITE IMPRESSED
HAS AN ORIGINAL LOOK TO IT AND REMINDS ME OF MY MINI ENGINE
SO BY NEXT WEEK I SHOULD POSTING PICS WITH THE ABF IN THE CAR
STILL HAVNT LAID EYES ON MY BRAKE DISCS
PADS
INDUCTION KIT
AND NOW HAVE A NEW COIL ON IT'S WAY TO ME
ALSO STILL HAVE A FEW MORE JOBS LEFT TO CONQUER
PAINT BRAKE CALIPERS SHINY SHINY RED AS CLOSE TO PORSCHE STYLE FINISH AS POSSIBLE
FIT NEW DISCS AND PADS 15MINS JOB
MOUNTING THE ECU ON THE SCUTTLE PANEL NEXT TO THE COIL IF THERE IS THE SPACE POSSIBLE
FIT FUEL PUMP AND STUFF AND NEW FUEL LINES
WIRE UP FUEL PUMP AND LIFT PUMP
GET MY HEAD ROUND HOW MY NEW ALTERNATOR WILL WIRE UP
TO BE CONTINUED………..

yeah level sender just needs 1 more wire for pump live. the other 2 are earth for both pump and sender, and sender feed for dash.
i dont know what order the pins are though as it has no markings, but if you trace the pins from the plug to the level sender uniot and the 2 pins on the plug for the level sender:
1 will be common ground for the lifter pump and sender
1 will be sender only
last is power pin will go to the lifter pump plug only
the lifter pump gets power from the same wire as your main pump
did i include an e/14 pin with your loom?

I'm not sure what that is.
I know there is the plug I spoke of which leads of from similar near where the lambda one is.
It has about 1.5 metres of length and I presumed that was the fuel pump one?
What does an e/14 pin look like?

its a chunky round pin, if asked i include this pin so you can upgrade a non-gti rear wiring loom to a gti one?
the alternative is fit a gti mk1 cab rear loom. you can also put a spade to pin N on the back of the fusebox thats a fuel pump relay output, but you'll want to put a fuse inline with it.
if you look at the engine loom i made for you there should be a spade on it with a red/white and a red wire, thats fuel pump feed for the injectors and lambda. i may have put the E/14 onto that for you, then you just pop to fusebox plug E pin 14 and splice your pump wire to it

That plug I spoke of was the blue/brown and white/yellow. Nothing spare left over that I saw.
Theres a single spade red/black is that for starter?

yeah thats inlety air temp, it;ll run without but will be better with it. a few late 90s vags have them 8v, diesel as well as abf. its a 2 pin sender which is like a push fit into the airbox or inlet pipe.
if its a chunky red/black yeah thats starter. if its got the nice black clippy plug you need a mk3 starter motor. 1.8-2,0 8v if using the 020 gearbox, or a mk3 16v/tdi if using the abf cable shifter box.
you could cut the plug off and put a spade on then use a mk1/2 starter
