Oil filled front shocks

I stripped down some front shocks today from my swallowtail, which was a 1.1. I twisted the cap off the top (once I'd removed the top mount, bump stop etc), pulled the body of the shock free from the steel tube part that bolts to the hub carrier, and then oil went everywhere!
On my old GTI when I did this a sealed shock came out (i.e. no oil everywhere).
Can I re-use the metal body of the shock and slide in a Koni TA shock or similar, or do I need a new outer shock tube thingy?
Thanks in advance
Rich
