garaged for 6yrs what do I need to do

Post

Due to a house move and financial circumstances I was forced to sorn and garage my beloved rivage. 6yrs later i am looking into getting it back on the road. It was in full working order when garaged and battery disconnected. Started it afew times and seems ok. I am going to have a mobile vw mechanic come and look her over and give her an MOT. After such a time what do I need to look at changing/checking/upgrading?
I'm thinking oil change, spark plugs changed, brakes checked, air filter changed, possible fuel filter change?? I want to make image-5.jpeg sure she is fit enough to go back out but don't have thousands spare to do any kind of overhaul. Any advice welcome and appreciated. Thanks

Nice looking Rivage you've got there!

I'd be doing all of the above plus coolent flush and refresh.
Check and adjust handbrake as it doesn't taken long.
If you don't know if or when it was ever changed, certainly change the cam belt and water pump at the same time. Not expensive!
New alternator belt.
Change the gearbox oil. Not a must but… at the very least check the level.
Check the hydraulic pump fluid level that operates the roof (there's a 'How To' post) in the technical section.
Clearly a very close look at the brakes and maybe think about changing the brake fluid while your at it.

I'm sure when others get to read this they will think of other jobs but that should get you started so to speak.

As for upgrades (unless you have a bunch already) DON'T do it!
The further the car gets away from being original (unless you can switch them all back easily) the more the value drops!

Good luck with it and please do keep us up to date with what you did and didn't do and the outcome of the MOT test.  :)

Look at your tyres, if the car has been sat in the same place for 6 years on the tyres I would be looking to replace them, if the side walls look cracked replace them, after all they are the only thing touching the road!

New oil, new coolant, new brake fluid, new fuel filter, new fresh petrol (old petrol goes off) if you can drain as much old petrol out of the fuel tank or at least have a good look inside the fuel tank, dirt/rust getting into the fuel system will kill it.

Brilliant guys thanks for the responses. Golf cab 90 by upgrades I meant brakes spark plugs tyres etc I would never ever defer my golf frm factory standard that would be sacrilege in my eyes :-)
I will speak with the mobile mechanic about all the above and try do some of it myself. Not being very car mechanically minded I don't want to mess too much.
I defo need to check the hydraulic pump on the roof as it stopped cuming back up on the switch before it was garaged. It comes down but not back up had to revert to manual. I've posted about this previous.
What tyre dimensions do you have on your cab mate? Just want to check I've got the correct ones

Check that pump fluid level with the top down as per the how to.

As for your Mod's, you clearly know what you're doing!   ;)

My boots are 'Dunlop Sport Blu Response'.
195 /50/R15 82V on BBS Sportline 15" wheels.

The boots are great in all conditions (real snow not tested) and they don't cost a packet.
I can really chuck mine around with confidence on alpine roads wet or dry, the later preferred.

If you have electric windows but do this on a warmish day.
Fully open them a few times with the engine running.
Just to free up the mechanism to watch and feel how they perform etc…

For the sake of a few quid do buy new wiper blades from Bosch and make sure you throughly have cleaned and polished the screen before fitting and testing!  ;)

For tyres I would check what's fitted to your car, my car has 14" wheels with 185/60/14 H.

With golf cabrio 1990 tyres V rated tyres may be a little high on speed rating as they will go to 150 mph so you could use H rated tyres as they are to 130 mph, but fit the same as what's fitted or check on the tyre pressure info as that should have the info needed.

Mark above is spot on there.

When I bought my wheels from Germany they already had the spec mentioned above fitted to them.
I was so pleased with the boots that when it came to replace them I bought the same ones with the V rating, just a newer (improved) version of them!
