BBS help sizing up (again)

Post

Hi All,

Been looking for a set of BBS's.  Ideally I wanted a set of 15".  However, a set of 14" wheels has come up for sale just 5 miles away from where I live.

I really don't understand sizing, can anyone tell me whether 155 55 R14 will fit an '83 Mk1?  Do I need anymore sizing information.  It would be great if someone has a picture on how these look (on a red tin top😉)

Thanks in advance

The tyres should really be 185/60 14, the ones you are quoting seem very small - just check the wheels are they VW fitment or possibly Vauxhall ones as I think some of the Nova's used a smaller sized tyre.

there are plenty of 15 inch sets come up so I would wait for those, they fill the arches better with either 185/55 or 195/50 tyres. Mine below has 185/55 15.  14 inch look okay but definately not with the size tyres you have mentioned unless you have the car slammed to the floor and need the tyres stretched to fit under the arches.

Thanks for the reply, think I'll hold out for a set of 15" do you know what offset I'll need?
Cheers

The RA's like mine are usually 6x15 and ET35, they actually available in 1983 as a VAG Dealer accessory, but most for sale are from 16v Golf Mk2s.

If you go for an RZ they are usually in 7x15, I have a set of those as well, but BMW offset of et25 I think, and with 195/45 tyres rubbed slightly when going over bumps. These are pictured below.

Standard size of tyres on standard VW 14" rims is 185/60/14

The 185 with the width of the tyre in mm
The 60 is the hight from the edge of the wheel to the top of the tread in mm.
The 14 is the size of the inside of the tyre to fit the wheel, this size is in inches.

155/55/14 are thin tyres and only being 55mm high your speedo will be over reading.

There is lots of websites with calculators to work out which tyres you can fit but you will need to know the width and size of the wheels you are fitting tyres to.

Then there is stretching your tyres to fit wide wheels which I don't know anything out as I have no interest in such silly things.

Thanks for the information and picture, that's exactly the look I'm going for.  Out of interest how much is yours lowered by?

I can't remember exactly, it has a Sachs Sporting Kit fitted about 20yrs ago think it was about 3cm at most.

If you are after RZ's then I have these sat in the shed. I refurbed them myself, new badges etc. Only issue is one or possibly two are slightly buckled so may need straightening or some careful balancing, or just use 2-3 of them and get an other one. Could do with the space so only want £75 But would need to collect in South Derbyshire.
