There's got to be a better way!!
Hi everyone, I'll start this thread here as it's specific to your cars.
We already do a downpipe for K04 fitment turbos, which fits a treat! The K04 setup compliments the space available on the MK1 layout, so much so, we've made it with 3" pipework.
The problem we have with the conventional method for fitting the K03 into the MK1, is that there just isn't room to make a downpipe which will flow properly.
From memory, it's on top of the steering idler boot and it points at the bulkhead. Call me a stick in the mud, but I'm not a big fan of watching cars go up in smoke or making pipework that doesn't flow!
What I'm proposing is to use the longitudinal manifold and turbo from an A4 or equivalent. This will make the outlet from the turbo point toward the passenger side of the car, giving a much better route for the downpipe.
This isn't ground breaking stuff because I'm fairly sure that I've seen it done before.
Does anyone have any pictures that they would like to share, so we can give this thread a bit of clarity?
If we can sort this out between us, there'll be a special deal on the first batch made for paid members

Nice idea mate in principal. I will see if I have got any pics of my KO3s fitted before I upgraded to a KO4.

I'll have a look tomorrow as can't access Photobucket at work. Can't remember for the life of me if I ever fitted my KO3s before selling it.

Thanks Pete, that's a good start!
What we need now is a picture of how they fit on the cars.
We're mainly interested in clearance from the steering idler gaitor and the bulkhead.
Anyone?

It would seem my memory is not what it was mate. It appears I sold my KO3s before I fitted the engine so can't help on the picture front.
Sorry mate

My car is using a k03 with a qpeng downpipe, however it is in the garage at the moment I will get a picture for you all as soon as it's back.
From my recollection it is very close to the gaiter but it hasn't set on fire yet

Mint! Thanks for that
I've found a car that's running the longitudinal setup but I'm going to ask the owner for permission before using pictures of his car in the thread.
Merry Christmas everyone

Excellent, thank you
The second picture shows why we have reservations about this setup.
To get the best from these turbos, you need to avoid restrictions and this setup is always going to be restrictive. Whilst we could make something better for a transverse setup, the longitudinal setup is always going to be far superior.

Ok… it's looking like we're going to be doing a U-turn with this.
After speaking with a forum member who's already been down this route, the only suitable donor car would be a Sharan which would cause problems for sourcing turbos at the right money.
I'm going to have a look at a car close up, to see if we can do anything with heatshielding to make room for a transverse setup.
We'll get there

Just a quick update for this. I'm looking for someone in the North east who's got a car that's in the middle of being converted. Initially, I would just like to come and have a close look, armed with a few bits to try.
Any assistance appreciated

Little update.
We've got access to a car next next week. If it looks good, we'll be getting it into the workshops at the beginning of March

I'm really disappointed to have to say that there isn't a way to make these work with conventional pipework, without compromising flow.
We started last week with K03 downpipes in mind and finished the week with our own 20v conversion mounts. Every car we've seen has had the engine in a slightly different position, this was going to cause us all sorts of problems with our existing 3" downpipe, so it's nice that something good has come from this.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with this thread
