measurements when fitting new steering rack?
i just wanted to know what measurements i need for fitting a new rack and tie rods ect. i assume there is a set distance to go by when threading a rod onto a new steering rack.
i will buy a haynes soon i promise.

For tie rod ends - count the number of revolutions when you undo them, make a note and do them up the same no. of turns.

thanks everyone. thats actually what i did when fitting the rack. but i read somewhere on a forum that there was a set distance to be measured. its on now and works fine, just need to go and get the wheels aligned. cheers all.

there are fixed measurements for how far to thread the track rods to the rack, and also what to set the passenger track rod length to.
get yourself a brown haynes manual,has everythign you'll ever need to know in there and more. dirt cheap off ebay i got mine for 99p!

ok thats what i thought. i knew i heard somewhere about there being a specific length to thread the rods to the rack. you couldn't perhaps tell me the measurements for that along with the passenger track rod length? just for piece of mind…

I have just checked the Haynes manual for you…
Manual gearbox is 69mm from protrusion of rack to tie-rod inner balljoint setting and the left and right tie rod lengths are 379mm… the haynes has a clear diagram for explanation…

thanks shughy. thats exactly what i was after. i will check it over tomorrow before i get the wheels aligned.
it so nice to have a steering wheel that feels like its connected to the wheels for a change.
