HotTunning coilovers - far too hard
Hey folks,
Bought some of those cheap coilovers from ebay (german based seller). My next door neighbour had a go at fitting them and said he had to "pressurise the rears" to get them on?! After which no amount of adjusting stops the rear end bouncing off the road at the slightest bump.
Has he b*ggered them beyond repair or is there a way to fix?
Cheers,
Adam.

Can you ask your neighbour for more details on what he did. You need to activate shocks, by pulling them back and forth along their full travel, was it this he did?
Its very unlikely he's broken them unless he used tools and cut into them in some way, or unscrewed something important.
How low/high is the car - pics would help.

I just put mine on the car and ran it. The rears should be a really easy job to fit. The main thing is to make sure the rear end is off the floor on both sides when fitting.
I'm confused as to the "stop" you are adjusting, can you explain?
I have been running hot tunning coils for 2 years and think the ride is ok bearing in mind how low I run it.
The guy who fitted them didn't take them all apart and muddle the springs up or something equally stupid did he?? fitting them should be easy and not take more than a couple of hours

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!
Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

There's no 'stop' I meant adjusting it as high and low as it'll go doesn't stop the hard bouncing.
I'll ask what he did and report back with pics
Cheers for the replies…

If you go too low you'll get bounce due to lack of movement in the shock.
Have you run a car on coils before?

Yeh my astra has coilovers which is down about 60mm ish on 19s so I'm used to a bumpy ride but the golf just now makes you physically sick it's so hard. Ill get pics and more info when I get home from work.
I've stuck a couple of breezeblocks in the boot just to add a bit of weight and stop it bouncing off the road for the meantime lol.

The back end of a mk1 is very light... Try driving it with a couple of lads in the back and see if that is any better?

didn't get pics yet, yes with a car full of passengers (especially in the back) the car handles the road ALOT better and stays put. However this isn't any good, I'm already running with blocks of concrete in the boot and drive it most of the time on my own.
it's not the bump stops as the car DOES rebound it's just very stiff. driving along the road at 30-40mph your voice is shuddering just trying to talk. couldn't attempt a dirt track or even a b-road, i'd be shook to bits lol.

Where did you buy them and is it within 7 days? I'd just get a refund and buy better coilovers. Sounds like they've muddled up the rear spring rates with another set for another car, but you'd have a job convincing them of this, so just get a refund and move on.

they were bought from "hottunninggermany" on ebay the end of last year I was in dialogue with them when they were first fitted about returning as they seemed to be faulty but the car then went off the road for winter until now.
low and behold, "hottunninggermany" is no longer an ebay user and I didn't have an email contact.

been chasing up this "hot tuning" company.
the ebay seller "hottuninggermany" no longer exists but "hottuning_eu" DOES and is selling the exact same coilovers today. I emailed them and got the reply, we are a different company entirely, the people you want are "tuningworldusa".
so I google's tuningworldusa and find they have a UK ebay store not selling anything but HAVE done in the past. Emailed them but got no reply.
Last resort with these is to adjust them myself, hoping the lower I go the more bareable it is to drive!
Anyone got a guide or how-to on adjusting rear (and front) coilovers with the c-spanner they came with?

I don't understand how this problem can be. There must be a serious issue with the rear dampers.
I have the same hot tunning suspension on the clipper it's low and it runs fine, but no means does it make you feel sick.
Out of curiosity, what top mounts are you running? and are any other parts upgraded or maybe worn out?
If you look on the left hand side of the forum page, there is an advert for a hottunning company, as they have the same name then I'm sure they are linked, they all seem to ship from Belgium.

I ran kw v2's which were perfect, switched to hottuning coilovers for few months and the car seemed all over the place the bounce is rediculous at the back and front were rock stiff.
I've now switched back to kw v2's. Justy shows the that the cost factor is linked to the quality.

out of interest how much were the kw v2s? I'm currently planning to just buy some new ones and take the hit on the hottuning duds.
I'm using the car daily just now so haven't had a chance to adjust (raise) the rear to see if it makes a difference or not.
Also considering just buying new shocks and springs, I only want it to look a LITTLE lower but retain the road comfort for summertime drives.

The kw v2's coast around the 1K mark, not cheap at all. But you may come across them second hand which would be cheaper. But not many let go of them unless their breaking their car or doing airride.
You may be better of with shocks and springs setup from kw or h&r, as you only want to go a little lower.

Standard I believe, I replaced the front standard mounts with like-for-like new ones as they were buggered but didn't bother with rears.
Would dodgy rear top mounts have that much of an impact on the suspension hardness though?

If they were perished or the urethane type then perhaps, last time I had the rear shock off I noticed these do squash a bit when under load. I changed all the mounts when I did mine.
I suspect the problem lays at the cheap coils tho.
If you do change the suspension I'd get some new rear mounts, mine are genuine parts, still available and not too expensive.
