I used to spend a lot of time on the old Campaign Register site, but it’s been about 8 years since I sold my last MK2 G60 and over 10 years since I sold my Mars Red Y-reg Series 2 Mk1 1.8GTI.
Now the kids are older, the time has come to re-familiarise myself with all things Mk1 as I start the search for a standard Series 2 Mk1 1.8 GTI (not red or white).
I’m not after a project as I’m not skilled enough to be able to complete it, so looking for something to have some summer fun with that’s pretty much ready to go with a good solid shell. How much would I need to spend to get something like that….?

Welcome to the club first of all.
Well the key words there for me are "summer fun" so you should be looking at a Cabrio because it just doesn't get better than that!
Now the question of how much is really a bit like saying, how long is a piece of string but I'm guessing you know that.
Firstly I'd say now is a good time to buy because all prices do go up in the spring and summer months and down in winter.
So for a Cabrio that's pretty much good to go I'd say £4k to £5k should put you in a decent genuine one.
Maybe just needs cleaning and a service.
Tintop more of course but as with both it's model dependent.
This forum is a very good source but it would be a whole lot easier if you put in a wanted advert stating I've got £XXXX to spend, so what have you got?
Good luck with your search and do let us know how you get on!
