Hello from Aaron in Milton Keynes

Iam Aaron, been in to mk1 golfs on and off for the past 10 or so years. I've not long ago brought back a Mk1 that I restored about 4 years ago it's got a little tatty since I sold it so the plan is to restore it again back on to its state when i sold it many years agoto which I can't wait to carry on with doing as I've already started doing but this cold and snow is stopping do that at the moment but at least it not a project car any more, its a car drive around in and carry on tidying it up as I go along.

I hope there is a few people around here that I car start going to shows and events with next year and enjoy drive the dream car around again.

Yea that does mean I know own the car I once owned feels a bit odd like having an old friend back though as you know do much about them.

Well sounds like Ikea it is then on Tuesday that's if Iam not snowed in.

I'd love to have my Alpine White mk1 1.3 back from when I hadn't long started driving… but like you I'd be a bit gutted if it was in tatters and not as good as I sold it  :cry:

I'm buying anti-freeze today…. worried that when I take the rad hose off to empty it…. it'll be a massive block of ice  8O …. not looking forward to hitting my fingers on bits of metal in the engine bay in this weather but got to be done.

if its a 50 50 mix of anti freeze and water, how much anti freeze do i need to buy? as in litres?

Just buy the big bottle, measure out equal measures of that and water then put it in mate.  When you empty the water out, leave the hose off and put clean water down it to flush it all…. then add your mix…… run the engine…. let it cool… check your levels again and job, job  :wink:

Just to hijack your thread on coolant:

1. Dont mix G10 and G12. I use G12 nowadays. I also use distilled water as the tap water is very hard round here.
2. To flush properly you need to take off all the hoses and take the rad out to back flush it. Worth doing if you look at the cost of antifreeze these days. You will be amazed as to what comes out.
3. Keep the heater on througout the process to keep the heater valve open. Helps again to flush the matrix and during bleeding.
4. To bleed leave the cap off until almost up to temp, massaging the pipes to get the air out. Put cap on, wait until fan cuts in, switch off, wait to cool down and top up/check for leaks.

Out of interest what happens if you mix both?  What happens if you leave a tad of either in as in you don't flush the heater like me  8O ?
