Tintop filler neck hose - can't get it on!

Post

ive got a new Klokkerholm filler neck from VW Heritage along with a new filler hose from Classic-VW. I've tried everything, but I cannot for the life of me get the hose fitted. I've tried fitting to filler neck first then trying to get onto tank, I've tried fitting to tank & trying to push the neck into the hose, I've tried Vaseline & WD40 on the nozzles to help, I've tried hearing up the hose in hot water to make it easier to manipulate. It looks like my hose may be a bit short if anything, and the filler neck is not at the correct angle to line up straight towards the tank nozzle.

Am I missing something obvious here, or are the Klokkerholm filler necks known to be poor quality?

Tintop filler neck hose - can't get it on!

Sounds a bit like they’ve sent you  a cabby one but those are quite a bit shorter, have you got any pics ?

I thought the Cabby one was significantly shorter, I'm talking maybe 30-40mm. I see classic-vw.co.uk offer 2 different lengths of hose, just wondering if I need the longer one. I'll get a pic & post later.

Unfortunately the filler neck to tank connection pipes being sold at the minute aren't genuine VW they're all hydraulic and fuel delivery hose made for compression fittings and not for 'stretching' onto pipes.

I've had them from Mark and Heritage and they were both the same. The really annoying thing is that you can buy the same thing from any 'fluid transfer' specialist. But it still won't work. You'll also find that after fighting with it for a long time it'll only go and crack around the outer edges in about 12 months time.

The only way to get them on is to heat the ends in boiling water for a long time and then use the lube of choice (I'm not going to ask why you have Vaseline in your garage  O_o  ) and put it on the tank end using a wooden on rubber hammer. Then insert the filler neck end by twisting and pushing like hell on it. then secure it to the car.

I used something different tbh in the end. After having done 2 of these before and after attempting the third I gave up and used some silicone hose instead as I'd bought some for my bike carbs.

Seems to be holding up so far.

Ian, this makes complete sense to me. I'm also not overly impressed with the Klokkerholm filler neck either, it just doesn't line up quite right & with the hose being so rigid makes it nigh on impossible.

Tempted to bite the bullet & get a stainless one along with one of the silicone hoses in your link.

Is the rubber hose new?
I tried with my old rubber hose but I could not get it back on my filler neck, I bought a new rubber hose and fitted it to the filler neck 1st then pushed it onto the tank, I did smear a little grease over the tank outlet and filler neck.

Mine was on a cabriolet which I had to mod it fit my car so can't comment on tin top filler necks.

If you are using the filler neck you have give it a good coat of paint (don't use hammerite as it's to hard and chips off easily) stone chip paint or simular is what you want.

you will need the longer hose, I wouldn't use silicone hose as its not designed for permanent contact with liquid fuel only vapours or short term contact

I had exactly the same problem, I replaced tank etc 2 years ago when I recommissioned my GTI and bought a new rubber hose as I didn't know how old the existing one was. The filler neck was fairly new and in good condition so I decided to reuse it.  I couldn't get the new hose on and thought it was down to the poor quality Klockerholme filler neck so I bought a new one of them but had exactly the same problem. Ended up using the old rubber hose and tried another new one before Christmas as I had the rear beam off and tank out but still couldn't get it to fit! I heated it, lubed it and tried to fit it to the tank first, the filler neck first but it wouldn't go on. It's like the rubber is almost too stiff/tight to stretch over the stub on the tank or filler neck but also too stiff to flex enough to get the filler neck on when it's up in the wheel arch. I ended up reusing the original one yet again! The only thing I didn't try was assembling it all on the floor before putting the tank in but I reckon that will still be hassle!
I hope you get it sorted.
