Fuel filler neck/cap advice.

Cap alignment issue.

The fuel filler cap on my GTI tin top has always kicked out at the bottom and I wondered if I can do anything or am I better off buying a new neck. It came with the car when I bought it so I don't know where it came from. I'm dropping the tank over the next few days to do a few repairs around the axle mount and floor pan so it would be a good time to replace it if need be.
Can anyone recommend a decent replacement? Also can anyone recommend a decent rubber filler pipe as mine looks like it's starting to perish around the exposed edge.
Here's a couple of pictures of the alignment issue.
Thanks.

Fuel filler neck/cap advice.

Hi Mate,

I'll fitting filler necks are usually due to having the tintop one fitted and chopped down / bent (for a while cabriolet versions weren't available)

You can now buy them stainless steal from CrazyQuiffs, they're quite pricey (£175 I think) but they fit well and won't need replacing like the others (poor design with the stones chipping / dirt sitting on top of them due to no wheels arch liners)

You should be able to get the pipe from CQ as well

You can always get lucky and find a decent second hand pipe from time to time, but over time you'll have the same issue, so protect them with stone chip if you go that way

Hi. Mine also kicks out but at one side. I can see that mine has been replaced in the past but where the pipe meets the body isn't a flush fit making the cap sit skewhiff. To add to this the lock on my cap has failed and wont lock tight even though it was a new one fitted last year just before i bought it.
My cap is the type with the sprung keyhole cover and was wondering if anyone knows where i can get a decent new replacement and does the type that Saulty has fit on my 1990 cabby fit as they seem less fiddly and less of a headache to use than the type with the keyhole cover.
Thanks.

I used this rubber hose on mine and it fitted well. Get/fit some new jubilee clips as well.

The cap is slightly off as filler neck is an aftermarket type and it's not quite made right, sorry don't know of any better ones as I don't have a tin top car.

Hella made the original ones so buy  ones of those.

I bought one of these as I my original one fell of the petrol pump while filling up and broke. Been on he car for a few years and is all good, my car's a daily so the filler cap is off every week!

Thanks mark1gls, just ordered the flappy type one so hopefully no more standing at the pump for 5 minutes trying to get the cap back on and locked.
BTW should this be vented/unvented and whats the outcome/problems of fitting the wrong one?
Cheers.

Marc.

Fuel injection cars should have a non vented cap so pressure can build up in the tank as fuel is sent out and returned, Carb cars should have a vented cap as the fuel pump is on the engine and it may struggle to get the fuel out of the tank if there is no air getting in.

I'm not sure if it will make that much difference to be honest but I've not really tried it out.
I do have a vented (early non flap over the key) cap on my Mk1 Scirocco (carb car) and a non vented cap (flap over the key type) on my Mk1 Golf Gti, I must try and swoop the caps over and see if it does make any difference.

It could be hit or miss if I buy another filler neck by the sounds of things. Mine is solid so I don't see the point in replacing it if I could end up with one that's just as bad.
I always thought that the vented cap was fitted on early golfs with a non vented tank but later tanks were vented through the gravity valve and didn't need a vented cap whether fuel injected or carb. Don't quote me on it though.
Thanks for the replies.

O.k. sorry to keep this thread going on. My cabby is fuel injected so a non vented cap is what i need.
Do you know if the cap ive just ordered is that type as i cant find anywhere that tells me yes or no.

Cheers.

All i can tell you is that there were like 3 different caps that I know of (locking of course),  they all looked the same but fitted differently….  The feet of them were slightly different….

I never locked my diesel because of some one tried to suck diesel and burn it in their car…LOLOL.

I have had 4 cabbyies, and the 89 locking cap was different than my 90's….. I will try to find a picture… but I would think that if the cap said fits up to 93 cabriolets, then it would be non-vented.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I've got the same one in the link I posted fitted to my Gti cabriolet (flap over key hole) and it's been ok, I believe it’s a non vented cap.

You could be right there and I'm probably wrong…
