My 89 Clipper has not missed a beat until today. She started first time this morning and ran well for 10 miles. After a quick pop into Lidl, I returned to go home but she wouldn't start. Oil is ok, battery ok, fuel in the tank but fuel doesn't seem to be getting to the engine.
AA mechanic didn't get her going and she was towed home.
Any ideas where to start? Fuel pump? Fuses?
Thanks in advance.

What does the plastic fuel filter look like, bits floating about in the fuel or completely empty?
Remove the fuel pipe going into the filter and blow down it back into the fuel tank, you should be able to do it with your mouth and hear bubbles in the fuel tank, refit the fuel pipe and give it a try….

The pump is dead with no sound, the filter is clear with no bits. Husband thinks it could be fuse, relay or the pump is knackered.
I really appreciate these comments to guide us.

You should have a mechanical fuel pump fitted to the front of the engine which looks like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-JETTA-MK1-MK2-1-6-1-8-CABRIOLET-CARB-ENGINE-FUEL-PUMP-C435/202596988335?hash=item2f2bb8b5af:g:j4IAAOSwOylcZWT6
Unless someone has fitted an aftermarket electric fuel pump….
To test the mechanical fuel pump you will need to un bolt it from the engine block and remove the fuel lines, move the lever on the back up and down and hold your thumb over the outlet, you should feel some pressure from the pump. You can then attach the inlet fuel line and pump the fuel fuel pump to see if petrol will come out of the outlet but be careful of petrol spraying out so have a rag to hand.
If unsure what's fitted to your engine post up a picture then we can see what's there.
