Think the VW Golf Diesel engine was quite an advanced and refinded performer for the time and went some way to chaging the then agricutural image diesel engines had. Diesels came as 1.5 and 1.6 and had about 50bhp - performance is similar to the 1100 petrol golf. VW also sold a diesel turbo mk1 in the final year (1983) of its production in Europe.
When that small rear light (red car) diesel pulled in to Gaydon on Sunday I was quite surprised how quiet it sounded! 8O

Considering some manufacturers are only just starting to cotton-on to the 'quiet, nippy diesel' market now, it was an advanced engine for its time! And it certainly shifts the light 845-ish kg around quite nicely thank you very much!

Bert, let us know how the five speed box goes once you're up and running! And I can't wait to start with the cooking oil aswell, glad it was successful!

I have put 75/90 synthetic gear oil in the box, well worth it,very smooth and gearchanges are easy.
Just the tailgate to be painted and a good polish and into storage for the winter.

Post a pic before you put the diesel away for the winter! Be nice to see it again!

Get a fairy liquid bottle and fill it with engine oil (used ok) squirt it into the back wheel arches from inside the boot, this will also run into the sills, when your finished park it somewhere so the exess can drip out of the sill and job done
