What Fuel?

I know that i must sound so thick but what fuel can i put in my 1983 1.8 Golf GTi?
As i've been working on it i've not had to fill it up yet!
Is normal unleaded from any petrol station ok????

Might be ok. Listen for any pinking under hard acceleration. If you do get any you might have to retard the timing slightly or use a higher octane ratiing fuel (shell optimax, bp super etc...)

GTI's left the factory tuned to run on old 98 ron four star. Ordinary unleaded is 95 ron, and the octane rating of this is too low and may encourage pinking unless the timing is adjusted. If your GTI timing is to original spec it's best to use superunleaded (generally 97-99 ron).

Stay away from the standard 95 RON crap.
Use a basic super unleaded @ 97RON at least… This is what I use as the optimax etc is just too expensive! I get very slight pinking for a split second when I put my foot down in a high gear. Could probably eliminate with an advance tweak, but don't want to touch it cos it flies as it is!  :mrgreen:
