weber DOCE carbs or stick with std injection??

hi my mk1 has a 1.8 16v engine and im lookin for the right engine mods before i proceed i thought i would ask your opinion first.

so far it has, 4 branch manifold, full system, free flowing air filter, modified cams, and audi 90 plenum.

my ideal would now be to ditch mfi and go for….. twin 45's, lightened and balanced bottom end, and direct port nitrous.

would the benifts of modifying the std injection system outwiegh the gains provided by twin 45's?? just wondered really, as adding carbs can have mixed results?

your input is greatly appreciated

cheers

steve

if you want carbs - either buy new to avoid the nightmares.

or if you buy s/h budget for a rebuild by eurocarb or southern carburettors.

i would be buyin new, i wouldnt even think bout messing around with second hand carbs.

basiclly what are the power gains? because realisticly im lookin at not much change from a grand by the time ive bought carbs, linkage, fitting kits, inlet mani and then had them set up on the rollers.

thats alot of money if i am realisticly only goin to see minimum gain,

With your mods plus 45's, you could be looking at around 180BHP.

If you are keeping injection, I think you would still have to spend a considerable amout of money to gain any more from the engine, possibly switching to Stand Alone management and throttle bodies - way more expensive than carbs!

good thats the kind off figure i had in my head,

i also have oil cooler, uprated clutch and possibly if required arp bottom end bolts,to hold everything together, and of cource, replace shells and bearings, (but thats a winter warming project, ill enjoy the summer in her b4 rebuild) i bielve in 'safety mods' b4 power increases, especially as i am determind to run direct port nitrous, so the engine has tobe in tip top condition.

but hear come the carbs by the look of things.

Sounds like a nice little project! Keep us posted on your progress…

I am gathering the bits I need to build a valver on Motorbike carbs, but I am going to use the base of the original inlet manifold as the basis of the new manifold to mount the carbs. This gives me the potential to add nitrous in the future as I will be retaining the original injector holes in the manifold.  8)

Will just put a blanking plug in them for the time being I think.

can you explain the benifits of this? over webers DOCE's?

bike carbs are a lot cheaper than car carbs, and are available pretty easily, much easier to et 2nd hand than car ones.
