do you really need exhaust assembly paste to get an air tight system?

has any of you more experienced lot out there had good results without it?

If you were to build a 'Concours' car you would do with out also when new from the factory the system would have been fitted with no paste .

I like to use it then you can fit and forget about it leaking .
