You need to drop the rear axle first. There are two "Straps" held in place with 13mm nuts I think. Undo these and the tank will drop down. Disconnect the wires from the sender at the top first…

ok im new to mk1's ops: , how do i drop the axle :dontknow: , once dropped i think i can remove the tank

Ha ha - Would be good if you are doing it yourself!
Dropping axle is quite easy too. There are 4 nuts (2 each side) which hold the axle to the car (Just in from of the rear arches). Spray absolutely loads of WD40 or other penetrating oil on these about 24hrs before attempting to undo and clean threads with a wire brush! They have possibly not been off the car since it was made and get seized and can snap (see below :roll: ).
Undo these and the axle will drop down, though will not go too far as it will hang on brake lines and handbrake cables. You may need to remove these to drop it further or you may be able to get the tank out from there.
Be careful doing the axle bolts up when you put it back together - Snapped one of mine the other day - Axle held on by 3 bolts and a weld for the time being!
