blowing at joint??

The join between the manifold and pipe, think theres two bolts holding it together and a load of white putty between the gap. is there some kind of sealent i can use to cure this, or should there be a gasket?

Outlet manifold to down pipe should have a gasket (036 253 115 A for series 2 small blocks). Should also have 4 studs and nuts, could be 2 have been broken off in the past. There is a lot of pressure in this area which will probabaly blow out any sealant or exhaust putty.

Easier job on a small block (cross-flow so exhaust exits at the front) than the GTI. Just undo down-pipe, clean up and refit with new gasket.

Thanks alot for that  i dont think it has a gasket atall, just crammed full of putty! 8O  its only about a year old too, full stainless, the previous owner bought a full stainless exhaust with a lifetime garuntee when the car was new - it fell in half 25 years later… so another was fitted for free  ill get a fresh gasket :wink:
