finding build date
Hi I have recently purchased a MK1 GOLF GTI and I want to find its build date from the vin number. It was a German registered car so I cannot use the English web sites as they just give me the year of english registration.VW want fifty euros from their database and I was wodering if there is any other way.It was a works entry finishing eigth in the 1983 RAC rally and it is still in full rally trim .VIN WVW22217ZDW041783. Hope there is someone out there that can help THANKS

Hi yes thats the one.It has been in a garage for over 10 years (dry ) I bought it with a Frogeye Sprite which I have nearly finished refurbishing, so after that I will have a good look at the Golf.I only finished a full nuts and bolts refurb on a MK2 Mini about 6 weeks ago so Im getting a bit knackered.(I am 65)
Thanks for the interest and I wiil post some photos when I drag it out of its garage.

Hi , Dragged it out today. It has been 10 years since it has run so i will change cambelt before I do.
It was built very solid with lots of strenghtening including I think 2 full floorpans .I have original seats (VW logo)
and original wheels.Still has lsd fitted but now on standard type gearbox (not dogbox ).
In time it will be returned back to early colours as much as possible but will not be starting till last project
finished. (just gone for paint today) I will try to upload photos later tonight. Sorry will have to be tommorow, I can,t get the hang of uploading yet

That looks good. Particularly like the 'Starsky and Hutch' style blue flash down the side of the car!

Now up and running.Changed cambelt ,ground valves in ,new stem seals and oil and filters.
It took about 5 minuites churning it over before it finally fired up.Not surprising after 10 years or more.
Doe's not pick up till about 3 thousand revs, but after that it screams away.
Now just need to get the brakes sorted.Hydrolic handbrake (with cables as well)
and big discs on front .
