Much prefer to try and save original parts whenever possible… sometimes you even surprise yourself what can be done.
Picked up this parcel shelf on the forum recently.
In fairness it was pretty much intact. The biggest issue was swelling and splitting at both sides, probably due to water damage.
Wish I'd taken a few pics when I started the repair, you're only seeing it from the point after the board was treated with resin and splits patched.
Again, missed taking a few photos of the sanding down and such.
Kicking myself the original material ripped while peeling it off. It's a non-GTI shelf so I was going to replace it with a better matching material (and in black) but even so, it's a shame.
Painted the visible surfaces and will be moving onto the cloth top next… keep you posted (but only if it works!)

Looking good dude, I've got a couple in the garage that have seen better days and I might attempt something similar.
Out of interest, what was different with the non/gti and s1/s2 parcel shelves?

S1's aren't my thing so unfortunately I've nothing to compare to.
On the S2 shelf top the non-GTI has a coarser, carpet like material whereas the GTI's is a finer felt like material, with vinyl piping on both sides.
On the few I've seen the board also has a slightly different profile around the two rectangular depressions, though that may have been just a refinement over the years or a different supplier… only guessing?
The GTI shelf I have is in real bad shape, though I might still have a go at bringing it back from the dead.

Stick 'golf 1 hutablage' into ebay.de and you'll get a selection of different types…
Seller on there at the minute with a stack of them, judging by the descriptions seem to be S1's… plenty of pics / styles - http://www.ebay.de/sch/marko511/m.html?item=401079083332&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Well, getting a bit of black material to match didn't turn out to be the simple job you'd have expected it to be but after some trial and error I settled on this man-made felt.
Unfortunately it wasn't available in the 3mm thickness of the original material, so got enough 2mm to double it up… worked out at less that £10 posted on eBay.
Initially tried Evostick spray-on impact adhesive but it was too aggressive and hard to work with, instead tried their carpet adhesive version which drys more slowly and seems to have worked a treat (on a small sample at any rate).
I've an old black GTI headcloth and will cannibalize that for the vinyl piping.
Likely get to it through the week and I'll post up a few pics when done.

did the carpet peel off easy? or is it tucked under the metal section?
I've got one I fancy a go at.

On these two shelves at any rate, it came off very easily.
The material is just pushed into the groove between the board and the metal bar on the leading edge, it peeled out without any hassle.
When I was reattaching the new material I didn't need to glue into the groove, the grip is good enough. I think it made for a tidier finish and did away with the potential for adhesive oozing out.
