water system pressure

at the weekend my car blew a hose and i had to drive bout half a mile  till could get some water in her.

now she keeps blowing the same hose off.

i have noticed that the water system is very very pressurized. i cant squeeze the top hose at all

the engine was originally ran with a expansion tank but now she's in a s1 shell its got a top fill. i blocked off the old hose to expansion tank.  didn't know if this had anything to do with it either?

at first i thought the thermostat thingy wasn't working so i removed it and she's still the same

its from cold as she starts to warm up (1 min idling)

hello!

you can wreck head altogether though rov,
if you are gonna drive down put your heater onto hot (sweaty stuff:)) and trip the fan out mate (piece of copper wire over both contacts on thermoswitch on radiator)

Fan already shorted out to be on when ignition on. Heater on and sunroof open lol! Would i be safe doing head gasket now and getting it torqued down later? I can do them to the ft setting for now! Bloody golf!

A diesel often warps or cracks the head when the head gasket goes, even in the first couple of seconds of it going (eg if it happened at speed or load). If you're leaking coolant, driving more than around 5 miles will severely damage the rest of the engine, it will thin out the oil, (probably start burning it as it creeps past the rings) and eventually you'll lose lubrication, then self-machine the cam, crank and other bearings to possibly seize the engine. Also the head will almost certainly crack and warp even more too.

So, you might arrive at Gaydon on the back of a truck with a seized engine - much more difficult to fix than a blown head gasket.

I can't really see the point of having the head off and not checking it for flatness and skimming if needs be.

before i take head off going to flush all water system out and see what that does then run with filler cap loose if need be

it's fine with filler cap loose.

just done 30 minutes worth off hard driving and still same amount off water in her and not too much pressure in pipes

although when i took filler cap back off the was white smoke (not steam) in there

Peddersgolf thanks for offering to bring torque wrench but the costs involved in 'sorting' this engine i'm not going to bother and straight get myself a 1.9td for her
