Is it a mk1 or 2

Post

Hi to this all,
Just got my hands on a 1985 cabby, 1.6
the engine code is an EW and I am looking at replacing the ht leads, plugs, dizzy cap etc.
As far as I know 1985 was bang on change over from mk1 to mk2 with the tin tops, did the oily bits of cabriolets change to mk2 equipment too?
looking on vag codes it is down as a '83-'92 golf so I assume I am looking for mk2 leads/any future bits I look to replace that is engine related, is that correct?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Jules

MK2 came along in 1984 - you'll get the odd MK1 tintop from '84 but they're rare.

There was no MK2 cabby, only MK1's then the next was MK3. All running gear stayed MK1 - can't recall if engine's ever switched to MK2 spec at all but mostly were 1.8 carb and injection versions, as per MK1

Hope that helps ;)

i found recently there are a number of different dizzy caps leads and rota arms depending on the engine code and year. rota arms come in different shapes and shaft diameter. easiest thing to do is take yours in then all the other bits match up
