1.6 mk2 golf motor in mk1 caddy.

Hi Guys, we have a mk1 caddy pickup which had a 1.9 tdi installed.
We have now fitted a mk2 golf driver 1.6 motor with a weber 32/34 dtml.
We have fuel going to carb and a spark at the plugs but it will not start.
We even towed it around a big field for 10 mins and still nothing:ocf_emoticons__BangHead:The fuse box has a few relays missing as it had a diesel in before(would
this make a difference to it firing up??)
Any advise would be great Guys :thumbs:Also does the ignition timing have to be spot on to start?

ignition timing doesnt have to be spot on but the closer the better. i advise you start by setting engine to TDC then move the rotor arm so it is pointing at the notch in the dizzy housing that will be close enough. make sure lead#1 is where the rotor arm is pointing and rest are 1342 clockwise.

if you've flooded it you wont get anywhere till you leave it long enough to dry out, remove the plugs and clean the tips if grotty, then just walk away from it for a few hours

Cheers John, we've got it as close as we can without using timing light and it sparks, I also fitted a weber carb which ive set with the idle mixture screw 1 & half turns out and there's fuel there and it popping. we towed it with just the downpipe connected and noticed there didnt seem to have much compression when dropping into 2nd gear to bump start it, would there be less compression without the full exhaust mate?

shouldnt be no, will still start fine without an exhaust system. double check the cam and crank timing, mybe the cam sprocket is fitted backwards its the same as the intermediate shaft one so has marks on both sides
