Small Vacuum Pipes
1988 1.8GTI Cabby DX engine.
I was running to the shops the other day and decided to blow the cobwebs out, accelerated not problem up to 6,000 rpm but when I took the throttle and tried to put my foot down again it started to mis-fire and really struggle.
Manage to get it home and I had a look at the timing to see if it had slipped, however in my process I managed to break the hall sender unit off… Tw*t!!!
Rather than mess around my old man manged to get one from a scrappers, so I put that on last night. Using the guidence on the forum I set the ignition timing up and managed to fire her up again, but it still is running pants.
I was told that it may be the advance/retard vacuum servo and whilst I was looking at it I noticed something that got my attention. The small hose that is on the ignition goes straight into the bulkhead and appears to go toward the speedo (no idea where it goes, I got cold before looking).
Also the vacuum pipe that comes out of the throttle body goes to the electric switch mounted on the air box/metering head.
I have a couple of questions?
1. Whats wrong with my car?
2. Where should these small vacuum pipes go?
I have been reading the forum and it sounds like they are the wrong way around, however if I swap them over, what does the pipe that goes into the bulkhead do? and what is it connected to? Can't find anything in the Haynes manual.
What gets me, this car has been running ok since I got it running end September 08 and all the pipes have been in the original places.
Please help?
Cheers and Merry Christmas!!

That one goes to the distributor part on mine… and the one going into the bulkhead goes to the branch of pipes from the k-jet. Not sure mine is correct but it all works :dontknow:
Throttle body pipe
The frayed pipe on the throttle body goes to the metal casing part on the distributor on mine… not sure what it's called but it's like a vacum thing on the side of the distributor… here it is:-
The bulkhead pipe
Thiis is a large black pipe on mine which goes from the brach of pipes over the k-jet into the bulkhead…. You can see both connections in this pic
Does this help you at all?

So the bulkhead one (large black one) goes on the main vacuum pipe as per picture.
The throttle body one goes to the distributor
and
The other pipe goes to the electrical switch on the air box.

Oh hang on a minute, when you say frayed pipe, is that the one in front of the throttle body or at the rear.
Rear mate…. the one at the front goes to the warm up regulator…. this thing:-

So do you have a vacuum pipe going to the electrical switch mounted on the air box?

Does your car have an acceleration enrichment valve?
This is located on the air-flow meter housing, and looks the same as the advance/retard vacuum actuator (flying saucer/sherbert disk - remember those!).
If you're not getting vacuum to these, then your car will not be a happy bunny when you put the pedal to the metal.
Maybe it's this.

No sorry, my cars at home….
So is mine but I took these pics to help someone else the other day… who thought they'd be helpful twice in a week
I'm not sure as I didn't notice anything going to the metering head. I could have a look tonight for ya if you want mate?

I need to check my vacuum hoses are the right way around, it would explain the poor performance.
Cheers Spudfingers.
