Can i high-jack this thread, i have an 83 gti which i thought id take for a spin for the first time in a few months today and i had the same problem with my fans. It did it last winter but was fine in the summer as i use them all summer to get the hot air out of the engine bay as it always runs a little hot. They worked when i started the car today but stoppped when it got upto to temp, i even gave it a little tap on the dash and they started again for a bit! Ive checked the fuses, rotated the motor by hand and have removed the switch and will replace tommorrow but if that doesent work any ideas please, as its an undriveable steam machine without them!! She is running a bit hot and actually overheated when running without the hot air fans on even though its 0oC outside and the bonnet was up??
Probably earths, take em off polish the connectors with a pcb rubber and it should be sorted. You sure its overheating I have the same thing with mine I'm sure it isnt overheating and its just a guage/thermo sender problem…

Can you tell me about that brown earth strap that goes to the cam cover as I don't recall seeing one on mine, where is that supposed to go then?

In short tommorow will be spent carrying out the electrical cleaning checklist that i am not looking forward to.
"disconnect intake trunking and valve cover connection from airflow sensor unit, undo clip at back on bottom of sensor unit and lift to access the two bolts underneath"
its just the bit above im struggling with, specifically the bold type , the instructions are great but i am not - can anyone elaborate please
