and for the haynes, good call, i paid about a tenner for mine though. one thing with the haynes, some bits of it are really useful, but some bits are just terrible.. for example, it says "set the camber correctly" and thats it, no info on tools or anything
but your car looks pretty sound APART from that filler neck. you'll wanna get that to the top of your things to replace.

Under the dash, between the door and the fusebox (about the same height up as the fusebox) on the side does that make sense?

Well done for getting the Haynes manual but to be honest I think a Bentley is better and easier to follow.

I've found that it's good to have both Haynes manuals for Mk1 and Mk2 golfs, as some things on your clipper will be later parts that won't be in the Haynes mk1 manual. Definitely worth having if you can pick it up on the cheap!
I recommend the Haynes restoration manual too.
Bit of hard work and that car will be right as rain in no time!

need to start some work on it asap. my grandad is being nice and buying me a distributor cap and new coil and some HT leads 8) and helping me fit em woop!!
gave it some life the other day all the electrics work apart from the wipers but can be easily sorted…i hope. didnt fire tho maybe because the distributor wasnt connected to the coil. i was like pulled a lead to show my dad and was like whats this……

engine ceased
BUT
Went to do a compression test on each of the cylenders found out the the whole thing was ceased solid wasnt moving any were
so removed the head, and underneath found the cylinders full of water and rust around the bore's. so now i gotta rebuild the engine by removing the sump and knocking out each of the pistons and replacing piston rings and big end shells. oh well will be nice to gain the engineering expirance 8O.

if it's had water in it you'll most likely be replacing con rods and possible the crank if you've turned it over with it in there. hydrolock. water unlike vapour does not compress.
might be worth finding a new engine unfortunatly.

well alot more has happened to the car. the new 1.8 engine is in and running sweetly. changed the gear linkage to a 5 speed and replaced the bushes in the process. all new brakes and lines on the front. so now just got the rear brakes, bleed the system then fit the new hood.
ooo also fitted a new grille as the old one had been painted blue with house paint i think. just took the chrome trim off and cleaned it. "good as new"
so yeah very happy with progress. has been a little slow but am still in collage so i dont get much time.
some newer pics
