And no its more the fact i bet enough of the people on ehre have done it anyway.
and tbh i dotn think id hit a kid, not saying i couldnt by chance.
I just want to spend the best i can, on my car, not insurance.
I class the money i have as money i have to send on my car
As in if it would cost 500 for me to stick a bigger lump in, and 400/300 to fix other etc then i mayaswell go bigger engine.
Plus if it cost 200 and i could get a gti engine for 200, then im better off getting a gti engine as it would help me in the long run.

Does your mechanic have a computer, and if so please give him the website address of this forum, ask him to register himself and post up the symptoms he's having trouble with.
Or is he the type of mechanic you need to throw a banana at to get any work done?

But when im going to end up paying out an extra 500 for the car, not insuranse cus of the fact i cant do sumut as my premium would go up too much.
Proove t me that it wouldnt rise by that much and i might not think about doing anymore.
But tbh, i waist enough money on insuranse anyway…

You've previously said you can't afford to take your car to a garage. If you factor in the insurance costs, it sounds like you can't afford an engine conversion either.
I'd look at asking your mechanic to post on here and receive some help of experienced tech people who would be able to work it all out.

OK… so disconected the fuel line to the carb. Turned the car over and we had plenty of petrol coming out.. Fuel pump working.
Next remove spark plugs and check for spark. We have spark on all
Cars been running for god knows how long without a airfilter and on top of that he overheated it due to coolant hose leaking.
So I did a compression test (as we have fuel and spark) and the cam belt hasn't snapped.
Compression test showed 1bar on cylinders 1+4 and 2.4bar on 2+3 (should be around 11-14 bari think?).
Then i added oil down the bores to see if it was vavles.. head gauskit.. pistion rings
After oil was added reading went back upto 7 bar (on compression test) Which make it seem like pistion rings. even more because of the fact there wasn't an air filter when he got the car. But also low compression could be down the the fact the head gaskit could have gone due to overheating poss head warp.. Now theres no oil in the water or water in the oil and smoke has never been coming out the exhaust.
Somone say somthink about timing belt jumping a tooth.. Thats made me think that could cause low compression.. Might try checking the timing mark but everythink so far is pointing towards piston rings or headgaukit

Hi everyone. Its adians mate. Geeza that looked over his car.

Cheers, is the 7 bar reading with the throttle wide open?
Its also possible that the valves are not closing properly, this can give low readings. But then with the jump from 1-3 bar to 7 bar by pouring oil down the bores, I'm 90% sure its simply down to a worn, overheated engine.
New engine time, methinks (if he can afford it!)

as for a sticking a big engine in a 1.1 is not the best car to start with due to so much of the ancilleries being different to a gti. if the case is to stick a big engine in cut your loses sell the one you have now to someone who is willing to do the work and buy a gti for the change.

Plus itl only get scrapped eventually so id rather save something that needs saving.
Plus the fact i cant afford the gti insurance when i last looked anyway.
Plus its pissible to swap a 1.3 with a bigger engine, ive seen it done so tbf i mayaswell go for it.
Thats the way i thihnk about it.
Cant go out buying new cars when im 20, student, wreck head etc.
It would be hard.
Plus ive bought a mk1 ive been wanting one for ages, ive eventually got one, its not getting sold.

1.8 mk1 gti engine and gearbox would be easy.. i mean the fact its carbed makes easyer in the first place. Then theres the fact its built to put into the car.. Surly its just a case of swapping the engine box onto same engine mounts. exhaust, brakes, fuel pump. conect throttle cable off you go?
I haven't looked into a engine convertion on mk1s yet.. im just going on what ive learn't from swapping my old VR out of my old mk3 (which was in poor conditon) into my new mk3 1.8 driver good condition lol
I wish it was carbed but anyway surly a convertion would be a easy on a mk1 compared??
You say generaly worn engine. Surly unless the bores are ****** piston rings should solve it… Only ?23 for a set of rings and ?50 for a head set. No need for new engine?

different fuel pump. gear linkage is different. suspension is different (different springs to take the weight as well as arb's front and rear) brake setup is different and brakes are different. can i stop yet ?
it's alot of work to change a non gti car into a gti thats safe.
There are too many online users to list.
