I know it sounds a little contradictory, but my reasoning is this: A brake disc is not a complicated part, its just a (particular shape) lump of metal. So saving a bit of money over regular suppliers isn't such a bad thing. The pads are a little more complicated…when you say "eBay", which brand of pads are you talking about? A reputable known brand through an alternative supplier, or an unheard of one? I've no particular experience myself with the variations of different pads but I'd stick with a name brand, at least.
Yes it can be said "buy cheap buy twice" but I think its a little more complicated and it comes down to the increase in risk/lower lifespan/lower reliability/lower performance versus price. So, if the price was only a little higher for a known brand (of brake disc) I'd go for the name.

Jurid & pagid make decent oe pads, and Ate discs are the best after market ones i have personally ever used, although my mate swears by Zimmerman discs?

genuine stuff is very good. pagid fast road pads are superb for exactly that.
