Then there are 3 wires, one is a permanent +12V, one is earth, the other is +12V when the stereo is on. Normally they are red, blue, black.

thats exactly what i want to do m8, how can i though unless i remove the aerial to see whats connected to the bottom??paul_c said
The easiest way would be to look at the wires coming from the power aerial and trace them to wherever they go.
can you see the bottom of it if you remove the inner wheel arch plastic cover??

To do it;
1. Jack the car up and take off wheel. Pull back guard and you will see aerial there. Make sure battery is disconnected!
2. If you are sure you old one is kaput, cut the wires and take out the old one.
3. Fit the new one to car. Keep the old bits that screw to top of aerial (on wing) from old unit just in case.
4. To make the wiring easier and in particular the main HF cable. tape the old wires to the new ones - that way you can gently pull them through from inside the car - otherwise trying to get them through the small hole in bulkhead is a pain.
What model is your electric aerial - I have wiring diagrams for both a Beru unit and Hirschmann unit.
Note: On some models the relay that switches the up/down action is built into the aerial and on others it is separate and will be located in the car.
Good luck - if stuck drop me a mail
Cheers
