Fuel injection system reset????
Is this likely? What does it involve? And how much should it be costing me?
You advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is actually wroing with the car, you don't mention any running problems, are the emissions ok? Ask what re-ssetting involves and how much it will cost/long it will take.
Not wanting to soudn to cynical, but was it your local VW main stealer? In my experience they just try and sting you for as much money as possible, and often don't seem to know older VW's that well..

The car is runnng fine and passed its MOT a couple of months ago so I guess the emissions must be ok too.
It is not a main dealer but a "VW Specialist". I haven't used them before and thought I would give them a try. Not too impressed so far.
I will ask them some more questions.

I have spoken to the mechanic (he didn't seem very happy with my questioning).
By "resetting" he means attaching the car to his "CO2 machine". It needs this because it is running lean which is causing a popping noise in the exhaust. From this he will be able to adjust the mixture to make it run smoother.
He is going to charge me ?25 for this.
Does this sound realistic or am I better off keeping my ?25?

If it was that far out it would have failed its MOT.
As for popping in the exhaust…
Adjusting the mixture will take him about 2 mins. Thats an hourly rate of ?750!

Could be the same happened to your mk1 at an MOT. If he richens it to get rid of the popping, he may find it is over the MOT level. If you tweak it yourself just keep a record of how many quarter turns and in which direction you make, that way you can always revert to back to where you started.
