Cylinder Head Refurb - 1.8 8V
Anyone got any suggestions as to best place to go - I'm still in two minds if to do myself or just do an exchange. I'd like to do myself but when I last looked didn't seem any cost saving.
Cheers
Andy

Valve stem oil seals I reckon - sometimes a little smokey - not too bad at all but last time I servied her number 2 spark plug was all oiled up.
Almost 180k miles on it so I can only assume could do with a refurb?
Will be doing full service in next week or so, so can see what the plugs are like :dontknow:

could always find a nice PB head in a scrappy or ebay, just to referb your self.
I rebuilt my PB head for less than 100 quid. Port matched and mild porting. Acid bath, and a skim. I just read lots on porting didnt over do it tho.
My 1.6 GL if just as quick as a 1.8gti, It revs so much quicker and the power comes in at 3800 rpm and doesnt end till 6200. Still have good torque too at the bottom end.
Just need time and money.

I remember on TSR website they say if you replace valve guide seals without full rebuild then new ones will go and even worse than originals. Any truth in this or just marketing talk?!

.. I found when u buy a cheap head gasket set, you will get a set of cheap n nasty seals. I had green ones. YIK !. The rubber was crap and it felt too loose on the valve. Asked at GSF if they had better ones, and yes they did. These fit much better and snug. Lots better in quality.
The myth of seal are as it says a myth. Fitted correctly and better quality and you can go wrong.
The only real reason if the new seals go after a short period are usually cause by badly inserted seals or very worn guides. There is a knack to getting them on too, just pushing with your finger will not do, or else they will fly off when in use. a perfect sized socket, long bar and a small hammer will pop em on tight, with out damaging the rubber.
Well i am still waiting for my engine to smoke, as they say proof is in the pudding. 500 miles and countin.
